JAKARTA – Avoiding and controlling children’s activities on social media is obligatory for parents. For this reason, in order to protect children’s viewing from inappropriate content, the short video platform TikTok launched the Family Pairing feature.
By using this feature, families can get closer and control their children and teens when using the TikTok application. The presence of the Family Pairing feature has been supported by the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection and also UNICEF Indonesia.
“Social Distancing keeps families together. They express creativity and share moments on TikTok. At the same time, they often learn how to navigate the digital landscape together and focus on ensuring a safe experience,” said the Head of Public Policy of TikTok Indonesia. , Malaysia, and Philippines, Dony Eryastha in their official statement.
For information, based on a UNICEF report in 2018 entitled “Use of Social Media by Children and Adolescents in East Asia”, 98.3 percent of adolescents aged 16 to 24 years in Indonesia already have smartphones. Of that number, 90.7 percent have used social media.
In Indonesia, many TikTok users started their creative journey at the age of 14. For this reason, it is important for teenagers and their families to understand digital literacy. However, this Family Pairing feature allows parents to connect with their child’s TikTok account.
The settings in the Family Pairing features include:
1. Screen Time Management
Regulates how long teenagers can spend on TikTok each day.
2. Limited Mode
Limit the display of content that may not be appropriate for all audiences. Even without enabling the Family Pairing feature, parents can help their teenagers set up Screen Time Management and Restricted Mode by visiting the ‘Digital Wellbeing’ menu.
3. Direct Message
Limit who can send messages to the linked accounts, or turn off Direct Messaging entirely.
With security first, TikTok has a lot of policies and controls for messaging features. For example, only approved followers can exchange messages, and control the images or videos sent in the message feature.
